NAILED: The Burning Desire

Today, I spent the whole day looking at my white nails and thinking of Excuse Moi. It’s all I could think of. I just had the burning desire to slather the pink glittery goodness that is Excuse Moi all over my chic white nails. So when I got home from work, I did.

The first layer was actually slightly awkward. See, I wanted it to be a thin layer of the glitter so it would dry a pretty light pink. The problem is, I did the layer too thin so some white was showing through. So then when I tried to fix that up by doing another layer I ended up with different shades of pink on each nail. Cool when you’re doing an ombre nail, not cool when you want it to be uniform.

So I ended up just doing one thick layer, which I think ended up looking like I just did a lot of layers of Excuse Moi. Still pretty, because that’s what Excuse Moi is . . . just not as exciting and original as I had wanted. You win some, you lose some!

NAILED: Excuse Moi, I Love Your Manicure!

Talking about Excuse Moi with a lovely commenter on a previous post got me wanting to have a little play around with it. I had Strawberry Margarita already on from swatching it on Saturday and thought they’d make a perfect match. Or, if you watch Australia’s My Kitchen Rules, a ‘marriage in heaven.’ Yes, they refer to things like pies and vegetables as ‘marriages in heaven.’

A more accurate representation of the colours, by the way!

Oddities aside, I had the urge to pair Strawberry Margarita with Excuse Moi. So I did it. But a little differently. I must admit, I was going for the half-half look. Not the oddly-long-french-manicure look. But that’s kind of what I got. It doesn’t look to bad, but it doesn’t look fabulous either!

The polishes still look really good together, I just need to be careful with the halving next time!

SWATCHED AND REVIEWED: OPI Muppets Collection – GLITTERS!

When I heard OPI was releasing a Muppets Collection, I was expecting a lot of green. That didn’t really happen. In fact, there was only one single green, and it was a glitter! The rest of the colours were red. Well, at least seven out of the twelve polishes were some form of the shade. But this is completely normal coming from OPI – it seems as if when they were teaching everybody the rainbow, OPI was zoning out and all she got from it was ‘Red’.

Being the kind of person that can’t resist lashings of chunky, obnoxious glitter over what would be nice neutrals,  I was most excited about the glitters when the press release came out. So when it was finally released, the six beautiful glitters were snatched up online and shipped down under so I could unwrap them in a manic Christmas morning frenzy.

Even though these glitters have been swatched within an inch of their lives, I still decided to do some myself (somewhat badly) using one coat each as three became too thick and time consuming to fully dry!

REVIEW Excuse Moi!

Excuse Moi has a base of a darker pink colour, which without the glitter would be nice, but not fantastic. But with the tiny speckles of multicolored glitter (including yellow, orange, green, pink and silver), it looks gorgeous. The only glitter in the collection to not have a clear base, with just two coats you achieve full coverage, quite like the glitters from the Alice in Wonderland collection. Even though the colour looks great by itself, it’s still really good for layering. It glides on like a dream, thin and buildable (quite rare with this six!). Overall this colour would make a fine addition to your collection, being versatile and fairly unique.

THE VERDICT: Excuse Moi!? NAILED.

REVIEW Gettin’ Miss Piggy With It

Gettin’ Miss Piggy With It is cute. Cute name, cute colour, cute all round. It has a clear base with red micro glitter and chunks of silver and red circle glitter. The overall look reminds me of tinsel, making it a suitable polish for the Holiday Collection. On Christmas day after I got this (keen bean right here), I layered it over OPI’s Designer Series Radiance (a metallic silver) and it matched perfectly and looked very festive! Because of the clear base, it looks a bit odd with no coat underneath, but layered it looks really good. The formula of this is pretty thick and can get a bit goopy, but if you use thin coats it’s not too bad. I used three coats for this swatch and it was so thick it was like having another nail on top of mine. Not desirable for everyday wear! If your in the market for a red polish and are wanting to try something other than your typical crème polishes, this would suit perfectly!

Here’s my Christmas manicure so you can get an idea of what they look like layered. Please ignore the dodgy manicure, I was extremely excited.

REVIEW Fresh Frog of Bel Air

Another appropriate polish for the Holiday Collection, Fresh Frog of Bel Air is a true green colour with tiny green glitter and bigger silver and green circles of glitter. This was also part of my Christmas Day manicure layered on top of the silver, and it looked really good. I didn’t find the formula of this one as thick, it glided on pretty smoothly onto the nail in a few swipes. If I hadn’t received all the glitters as a present, I think I still would have picked this one up as good true green polishes seem to be rather rare, as this is the first one in my collection.

THE VERDICT: Fresh Frog of Bel Air? NAILED.

REVIEW Gone Gonzo!

Easily one of my favourites of the collection, Gone Gonzo is this beautiful icy blue, again featuring tiny blue microglitter and larger circular chunks of blue and silver glitter. The formula of this was seemed to be a bit thicker. I did one layer for this swatch and it ended up looking very patchy and goopy.  But this is not noticeable when layered. I’ve played around with this polish quite a bit, layering it over neon oranges, aqua and matching frosted blues. This is definitely a beautiful polish, it’s really versatile and matches with a lot of colours and makes them pop. The actual colour of the polish isn’t too unique, I have maybe two or three that are quite similar, but the glitter and the silver in it makes it stand out.

THE VERDICT: Gone Gonzo!? NAILED.

REVIEW Divine Swine

Divine Swine was the only major fail in the glitter collection for me. First of all, the name. I spent five weeks at a farm for school and know first hand that there is nothing divine about swine’s, they smell and their colouring is an odd brown pink, not something I want on my nails. Obviously the colour isn’t meant to look 100% like a pig but just the idea in my head isn’t appealing! The colour just wasn’t that amazing, it didn’t suit the colours that are already in my collection like the others did.

THE VERDICT: Divine Swine? FAILED.

REVIEW Rainbow Connection

Last but not least, the much hyped and coveted Rainbow Connection. Just like the name says, this polish has a clear base with giant chunks of multicoloured hexagonal glitter! The polish would look great over anything, especially bright orange, which is how I first tried it. Three layers over a colour achieves full coverage (well as full as it gets for a glitter), but one swipe as a top coat leaves just a few chunks scattered on the nail. This is my favourite polish from the collection, it’s like nothing I’ve owned before and it’s a great dupe for Deborah Lippman’s Happy Birthday which is hard to find where we’re from.

THE VERDICT: Rainbow Connection? NAILED.

Rainbow Connection's the winner here!

COLLECTION CONCLUSION:

Although four out of the six polishes are very similar (maybe a bit too similar), I think as a whole this collection is a good one. This formula of glitters is something OPI hasn’t done before (but certainly has now!) and it really suits the fact that it’s a Holiday collection, and the movie it’s based on.

Excuse Moi coming close

It does annoy me that OPI cannot move on from red, ruining the rest of the collection in my eyes, but I think if you want your Muppets fix, the glitters are a good one to get. Rainbow Connection and Excuse Moi are definitely standouts but and I think that apart from Divine Swine, it wouldn’t be a mistake to get them all!

THE VERDICT: Muppets Collection Glitters? NAILED.
